Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology in 2025.
Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.
Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.
Players are granted the right to challenge specific decisions made by the chair umpire, echoing the system already in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This development follows just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific decisions, such as:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Potential hindrance end of a rally.
Importantly, there is no cap on the number of reviews a player can initiate.
Case in Point
An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its events.
Further Updates
Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.
Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
